Found a list of some interesting resources on the Free side (mostly) some are merely capped/reduced freemium versions.
I rather like sculptgl - I find it much more approachable than either Dazs Hexagon or Sketchup (browser version) for beginners (yay, me).
Houdini is also worth a look - looks powerful and cool, wahey!, node based procedurals!
I've not had a chance to explore any of the other options - The list was discovered while looking for something specific, and I've now wasted an hour or two off on a tangent or twelve - all3dp has lots of lists of s/w/tools etc.
Special note on Bforartists www.bforartists.de for those who liked what Blender has to offer but are put off with it's steep learning curve ui.

- If packages are mentioned the onus is on the user to check validity.
- Software version unspecific
- Any version references (i.e postgresql version) cannot be taken as correct (your system may be versions behind or in front)

3DL to Iray and back with ease
Sickleyield and RiversoftArts released their Iray to 3DL materials converter (last week was it?...two weeks?). I snapped it up, I like to give Daz plenty of reason to be aware people still appreciate 3DL related content (3DL has a lovely tone, might not be anywhere near photorealistic without a lot of effort and skill, but it always reminds me of the covers of a fantasy novel).
Anyway, I've not used it too much, except in a try out on a few items that had no 3DL materials and it worked rather well.

A new Hard Drive instead of a life
I know others have been struggling with space issues as their runtimes grow.
I hit critical this morning - woke having left another render to rib running, hoping to kick it off on 3Delight first thing - only to find a dialog complaining of lack of space to save files (well I had been hitting the freebie sites pretty hard recently, and then the recent interesting Daz Originals have been too interesting to pass on)
Popped into Currys PCWorld and picked up a 2TB (was planning a 4TB, but it's well over a hundred unless ordering online and this was an emergency).
Still, now I can move some stuff off /home and merge the Dim Downloads folders int
